the childhood ecosystem

I learned in geometry and physics that any three points always forms a single, flat plane. Think sturdy. A three-legged stool will never wobble on uneven ground—all three legs will always make firm contact.

I adapt that concept with what I’ve learned about the Third Place. Home, school or workplace, and extracurricular activities.

My siblings and I attended Title I schools. In the U.S. Title I schools receive federal funding to support low-income students. To qualify, at least 40% of the student population must enroll in free or reduced lunch programs.

I found my belonging among fellow classmates and teammates, with committed teachers and staff.

Athletic, academic, performative, intimate, spiritual. I didn't just find one community. I had unintentionally built a portfolio of belonging by saying yes to trying new things.

Each one gave me something different.

It would become a lifetime practice of nurturing creative thinking, and the out-of-the-box problem-solving that can’t be taught. They have to be learned.

As soon as I got home from school, my mom would force me to chug a glass of whole milk. It was a common belief among Asian families that it would help us grow. The ‘Got Milk’ campaign must’ve been the influence.

My home life involved a lot of work, helping my mom sew, feeding siblings, and cleaning the house.

I thoroughly enjoyed my evenings after my siblings went to bed. Homework while watching TV. Mind you, this was before the internet.

I was addicted to the screen, still am. It was a great thing to be adopted, as Brian and Tammy instilled a practice of less TV. For every hour of screen time, we would need to read a book for 30 minutes.

Screen time is why I want to prioritize time away from it with the Summer Camp Project.

It’s a distraction from the beauties and connection in real life.
